Sedgefield v Whitby 05/12/09
Sedgefield -29
Whitby – 50
Whitby made the excursion to Sedgefield this week eager to get their promotion battle back on track.
After a mix up at the start Sedgefield only started with 14 players. Even with having an additional player Whitby found it hard going and was not as trouble-free as first seemed. Whitby’s first try cam from a lineout witch Whitby won against the head then intelligently got passed wide and ended up in Captain Oliver Roberts’ hands to go over for a routine score ,just about a carbon copy of the try was repeated 2 minutes later and again Roberts went over again.
Whitby’s scrum finally got their act together and started pushing and were winning opposition ball as the mass of the extra man took toll. Watson and Allgood were tackling well and keeping the opposition pinned back.
From a good driving maul which was skippered well by Lonsdale and Russell saw James Gildroy blast over the line, proving he has fully recovered from his horrific neck injury a few weeks earlier. Sedgefield kept on the pressure and with some good tough runs from their inside centre and full back saw them go over for a couple of scores.
From another stolen line out, the ball came to Allen who commanded his line well and spun the ball wide and the responsibility came down to the flying winger Guy to do the honours and place the ball over the line.
Whitby’s forwards were now dominating all phases of play with Marcus Coates getting his hands in everything and spoiling all Sedgefield play which slowed play down and gave time for the more robust players to get there in support.
A trademark Dave Straker try came next as he demolished his way through the defence to go under the posts, thanks too scrum-half Pete Sentiford who gave him the space..
Sedgefield came back from the kick off and it saw the inside centre go over again to take his tally to 3,
Straight from the kick off Whitby came back and scored again, the last five minutes of this game where frantic and end to end. Whitby’s final try came from a well practiced penalty move which first of all didn’t go to plan but with some quick thinking and lightning fast reactions saw Darren Lonsdale go over for what was thought to be the final play of the game.
The referee indicated there was only 1 minute left to play but after 5 minutes Sedgefield were pressuring the Whitby line and it saw their Scrum half go over for a debatable try.
A good performance eventually from Whitby this week, but we should not under estimate the teams lower in the league, we need to treat every game with the same intent and purpose if we are to get promoted.
Man of the Match – Marcus Coates
