U16 Whitby v Malton 13/12/09

Whitby Under 16's rugby team                Sunday 13th December

Whitby hosted Malton on Sunday in what was expected to be a very entertaining match and the the game started at a great pace whitby were winning plenty of ball and attacking malton keeping them pinned in their 22,however, a sloppy kick straight to Malton's pacey winger saw him run nearly the full length of the pitch until he was held up nearly on the line by excellent tackling from Joe Lenton but the ball popped to malton's fullback, who was supporting, and he scored the first try.Whitby resumed the game on the attack again with some lovely passing but they were stopped by the malton forwards who slowed the game down unfortunately another mistake with another kick saw another long run by the malton full back who scored again in the corner much against the run of play. Whitby changed tactics and the forwards started getting the ball to the backs quicker, finally Whitby were rewarded with a try from Matt Dudman which was converted by Sam Webster .

It didnt take long before Whitby scored again a quick ball and some nifty footwork from Matt Dudman saw him score his second try of the half which Sam Webster converted giving Whitby the lead 14 - 10 at half time.
Malton started the second half trying to stop Whitby getting any possession when Malton got the ball they passed straight to their fast wingers. 10 minutes into the half Malton took a deserved lead, the Malton scrum pushed the Whitby forwards back  a quick ball to the wing and Malton scored under the posts they now had a 3 point lead and Whitby realised they had to up their game, fine tackling by the Whitby forwards and great ball handling by their backs and Whitby gained some good field position but they were un able to make the advantage count As the game dragged on the forwards started to dominate winning rucks until with only 5 minutes left slick passing by the Whitby backs saw the ball reach Alex Beaumont who side stepped 2 players and ran in under the post Sam Webster converted this third try The lead returned to Whitby and their defence held off Malton's attack for the final few minutes giving Whitby a great hard fought victory
This game was a great advert for the game of rugby both teams playing to a very high standard despite suffering injuries and with several players playing out of position

Final Score  Whitby 21     Malton 17
Try Scorers   Matt Dudman 2
Alex Beaumont
Conversions  Sam Webster  3
Man of the Match  Joe Lenton
