Whitby v Hartlepool BBOB 23/01/10
Hartlepool BBOB – 7
Whitby hosted Hartlepool BBOB this week hoping to revenge the close defeat at away fixture earlier in the season.
The opening try of the game came from some well organised mauling from Whitby which saw John Harrison flash forward and present the ball well for Matt Russell to collect and with some extra shove from Ste Gildroy and Darren Lonsdale the ball eventually went over the line
Whitby’s scrum was functioning well with the power houses of James Gildroy and John Harrison providing the driving force to push the scrum forward and from a scrum close to the BBOB line managed to drive over the line for an easy put down for Matt Russell.
BBOB came back with the stand off providing some neat passes to exploit the holes in the Whitby defence, from one of these moves the BBOB centre spotted a gap then managed to carve a cavernous hole in the defence and the ball ended up been put down under the posts.
Whitby’s sizeable forwards were pressuring the BBOB line but the defence stood firm and Whitby were not to penetrate the way they would of liked so with some quick hands and thinking saw the ball spin through several players hands and finally found Guy Taylor as the extra man on the wing to finally go over.
From a handling mistake by BBOB captain Oliver Roberts managed to hack the ball forward and used his football skills to dribble the ball down the field to score for Whitby.
Whitby made a few changes in the second half with a slight change to the second row with Matt Comber and Matt Jones adding some mass to the scrum, this soon paid off as the scrum trundled forward on most occasions.
Oliver Roberts finished off the scoring for Whitby with his usual mind bending running to top off a successful win for Whitby.
Another good win this week with the scrum showing what they can do when they can be bothered to do it, it looks like the training is paying off so let’s knuckle down and put the work in.
Man Of Match – James Gildroy – Pure power house in the scrum
