U16s Whitby v Yarnbury

Whitby Under 16's      Sunday 17th Jan
Yorkshire  Cup  Round 3
On a very cold and windy day Whitby hosted Yarnbury in the Yorkshire Cup a good crowd turned out to watch this match after Whitby cup sucess last year. But Whitby were dealt a serious blow before the kick off when Jack Reeves dislocated his shoulder in the pre-match warm up and had to go to hospital. At the kick off  Whitby started very fast scoring a well worked try in the first few minutes the ball passing through the backs to Dom Hill who out paced the Yarnbury full back to run in the first try. It didnt take Whitby long to score their second try the ball reaching Alex Beaumont who scored . This looked as though it might turn out to be very one sided as Yarnbury had shown  little in the first quarter of the match ,however, they stuck to their game plan and started to pressure sucking  the Whitby forwards in allowed them more space to get the ball out to their backs Whitby conceeded several penalties which resulted in Yarnbury scoring their first try Yarnbury were now playing some attractive rugby forcing Whitby to defend deep in their own 20 only the odd break out run by the Whitby backs releaved the pressure.Whitby conceeded several penalties on their 5 metre line Yarnbury ran a tap penalty move when one of their forwards picked up and scored levelling the score The game became very tight Whitby tried to move the ball but were being thwarted by Yarnbury with time running out in the first half Whitby won a scrum in Yarnbury's 20 and Whitby no 8 Jack Braithwaite majesticly dived over the line to give Whitby the lead which they held on to at half time.

The Second half started with the both teams playing some lack lustre rugby which could have been the result of them having a 5 week layoff due to the weather Whitby's forwards were more suited to the ground than their Yarnbury counterparts and started to run the ball themselves making plenty of progress the backs then found more space out on the wings which lead to Chris Paylor  receiving the ball and scoring in the corner after that score Whitby's influencial scrum half Matt Dudman and fly half Sam Webster started spreading the ball out across the backs letting Alex  Beaumont make some scything runs. Then a loose ball was picked up by Whitby's second row and carried down the touch line playing the ball in to Jack Braithwaithe who was held up just short of the line but pressure paid off with Jack crossing the line from the resulting scrum. Yarnbury went close several times and were unlucky not to get back into the game only fine tackling by the Whitby full back Joe Lenton kept them from crossing the line. With 5 minutes left whitby finished the scoring an intercepted pass by Alex Taylor saw him score Whitby's sixth try.

Both teams tried very hard to play an entertaining game despite the very heavy pitch and the wind which made kicking impossible Although the teams seemed slightly rusty after long lay offs due to the weather this game was played in an excellent spirit and were a credit to their clubs.
