U16s v Selby 14-02-10
Whitby made the long trip to Selby to face up to the always stern test that was sure to meet them . Upon arriving Whitby found the long journey had affected them and started off by gifting Selby a golden chance to put early points on the board through a penalty given away through the Whitby forwards going into a ruck off their feet, fortunately the kick was missed. This early wake up call only served to rile the Whitby forwards who set about working their way up field with the help of the half backs and soon worked themselves up to the Selby 5 meter line and after several phases of play allowed Steven Cuthbert to barge his way over the line, the kick was converted by Sam Webster , after Whitby had caught the kick off some slack interplay between the forwards resulted in a knock-on and a scrum to Selby and from this play some poor tackling from the backs allowed Selby to cross the try line .
After this the game settled into a rhythm of Whitby retaining a lot of ball in midfield without gaining much ground with the well honed Selby defence holding on until Whitby forced a 5 metre scrum and from the back row move Connor Clennan wriggled his way out of a tackle and crossed in the corner this left Whitby 12-5 in front at half time. After this Whitby again settled into a pattern much the same as the first half with Whitby exuding dominance in the line out and general forward play providing the backs with a constant supply of ball, but then as Selby broke free Connor Clennan went to make a covering tackle which was deemed to be a high tackle and was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes this gave Selby great encouragement scoring almost immediately whilst the Whitby players were distracted by a minor fracas breaking out in open play which was witnessed by the referee who felt it was not worthy of further punishment .
This again allowed Selby into the match with the deflated forward pack not able to cope with the now buoyant Selby forwards forcing Whitby on to their own line despite defending well Selby eventually managed to score in the corner .This hailed the return of the sin binned player giving a boost to the Whitby team which meant the vast majority of the play was in Selby’s 22 after numerous penalty’s forced a 5 m line-out which after a well executed line out move resulted in Jack Braithwaite charging towards the try line carrying 3 people with him as he crossed the line . After the score Whitby made it increasingly difficult for themselves until well into the last 15 minutes when a high tackles on rookie wingers Matt Kendrew and Charlie Ashford resulted in a yellow card for Selby’s fullback this meant Whitby who just had to see out the game at this point were able to this relatively comfortably Final Score Selby 15 -17 Whitby
