Maroons v Sedgefield 27.03.2010

Whitby – 56
Sedgefield – 0

Whitby was hoping to gain a few points on the board this week after a disappointing loss the previous week at Prudhoe and Stocksfield. Whitby won the toss and elected to play against the wind and up the hill for the first half, this meant they had to keep the ball tight with short sharp passing and recycle the ball well as kicking was not an option due to the wind.

Whitby’s scrum soon started dominating the tight play and managed to push and wheel the Sedgefield’s scrum to their advantage. With the forwards dominating it gave chance for scrum half Stentiford to provide some good clean fast ball to be passed along the line through the hands and end up on the wings for them to score.

Some strong running from the raging bull James Gildroy saw some gaps appear in the defence and with excellent support work from Shane Young, Darren Lonsdale and Matt Comber the ball quickly got released to again go down the line for the wingers to score. In the second half Whitby kept the same game plan as the first but the added option of kicking was back on the menu.

Steve Allen took advantage of this and intelligently kept Sedgefield pinned back in their own half with his pinpoint kicking. Sedgefield had a good phase of play as their strong centres ran through the Whitby defence and managed to work their way up to within 5 meters of the Whitby line, but again some strong work from the Whitby big men and a massive boot saw their efforts wasted as the ball ended up 80 meters back behind them.

Whitby kept on the pressure with the same game plan, the forwards providing good fast ball to be released to the backs, which paid of as they ran in a succession of tries with Guy Taylor, Nick Beaumont, Pete Stentiford and veteran winger Jim Fountain adding their names to the score sheet. A strong win for Whitby this week after the disappointment of last week, we just need to keep playing hard for the last few games.
