U16s v Malton 28-03-10
Whitby under 16's rugby Sunday 28th March Whitby hosted Malton
Whitby were forced into making several changes from the previous week due to Yorkshire call ups and many injury problems they bought in some of their less experienced players all of whom deputised admirably the game kicked off with Whitby playing against the wind and the slope and it took Whitby a while to settle with all the enforced changes but once they got going some fine runs by Dom Hill and some strong play in the centre by Mark Overton saw Whitby starting brightly. With 20mins gone Whitbys injury crisis worsened Ryan Skidmore having to go off with a shoulder injury meaning Mitch Eglon moved to hooker and Bruce Reed went forward joining James Newton in the front row this disrupted the scrum giving Malton a window of oppertunity and they took advantage and were in the Whitby half the next 10 minutes which resulted in a deserved try coming from a scrum however Malton failed to convert this try. Whitby's influencial stand in captain Sam Webster then decided to take the game by the scruff of the neck and controlled the game putting in probing kicks and fine passes which resulted in Dom Hill making a spectacular run 60 metres down the wing only to be tackled just short of the line but some fast retreiving and distribution of the ball by scrum half Connor Clennan meant the ball going to Sam Webster then Steven Cuthbert who forced his way over for the try this was converted by Sam Webster. Yet another injury blow meant Whitby lost Chris Paylor for the remainder of the first half with a blood injury.
With the injury crisis going from bad to worse Whitby lost Josh Shutt with a neck injury and with no more substitues Whitby were forced to play the second half with 14 players.Whitby remained intent on playing entertaining rugby and with Malton also playing some good rugby and everyone was enjoying the game Whitby's back row of Steven Cuthbert Jack Reeves and Jack Braithwaite were making some great runs with the ball only to be stopped short of the line It was Malton who scored the first points of the second half with a converted try scored under the post to take a 7-12 lead. Now Whitby started to play the game in Malton's half searching for the next try some strong runs from deputy fullback Charlie Ashford keeped Whitby going forward and whenever Malton attacked they were thwarted by some strong tackling by Matt Kendrew and Cameron Leadley Whitby had a sustained period of pressure and a lineout 10metres out saw Bruce Reed and Jack Braithwaite winning the ball and taking it forward only to be held up just short of the Malton line but when the ball came to Jack Braithwaite again and he crashed over to level the scores.with time running out Whitby's 14 men still kept attacking until the last minute when Malton got the ball and with Whitby over stretched in defence Malton scored a break away try.
