South Park Rangers v Whitby - 5/09/09
Whitby 34
On a sizzling summers day Whitby kicked off their start to the season with an away trip to the newly formed South Park Rangers. The game got underway at a rapid pace but in Whitby’s usual style they took 5 minutes to wake up and get into the game and conceded a try very early on.
This woke Whitby up and they came back with some high quality team work recycling the ball well which saw Richardson go over the line for a quick answer back to the Rangers score.
Whitby then pressed hard and scored another quick two try’s both from the winger Latus, with the second starting with Russell pilfering the oppositions ball followed by a good drive up the pitch then getting dispatched along the line to finish out wide for Latus to go over.
Whitby’s scrum was working well with the two powerhouses Harrison and Gildroy manoeuvring the scrum to the fore and winning some opposition’s ball. Also the backs were working well in the defence keeping the Rangers back in their own half with some intelligent kicking from Stentiford and Roberts.
The last try of the half was from the flying Dave Straker who continued his bull running style from last season to go under the posts.
In the second half Whitby let off and Rangers came back with some robust runs from their scrum but he ran out of support and could not get the final ball away. A ghastly tackle by the Rangers number 12 on Richardson saw the Rangers player get sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes.
The lineout’s were engaging well with the Whitby lifters and jumpers winning all of their own ball and several of the oppositions, it came from an oppositions lineout that Whitby pinched and then the ball got spun along the length of the line to see Pindar go over for a well deserved try. The concluding score of the game came from a chip forward by Straker which saw the express speed of Pindar to chase and score his second of the game.
This was an excellent start to the campaign for Whitby with all the summer training paying off.
