Chester le Street v Whitby 26/09/09
Chester le Street – 12
Whitby – 62
Again another sweltering competition day for Whitby this week so the team was acclimatised from the previous weeks and were ready to play. In Whitby’s usual away form they started sluggish and with a bit of bewilderment in the defences line saw the opposition achieve a score in the first 2 minutes and they also added the conversion.
This shocked Whitby and they soon came back with some fearsome team work and after a strong thrust forward from James Gildroy saw a textbook platform set to release the ball wide for Oliver Roberts for a quick reply to the Chester score Again from first-rate team work, the backs did what they do best and set up a faultless move in the midpoint of the pitch for Dave Straker to add to his amounting tally of tries this season. In this kind of form there could be some records destroyed this year.
Everyone was functioning well and doing the duty they were supposed to be doing, it was nice basic clean rugby with the forwards taking on the ball, setting up good quality platforms to give the backs the ball take all the triumph. Another 3 more scores came before half time, one from a further backs move which confused the opposition and saw Tim Richardson pass straight through the core of the Chester’s defence with no resistance, the other two came from the winger Mick Latus after the ball was dispatched along the line to find space on the wing.
Whitby’s scrum started to let off and this saw the Chester le Street’s scrum pilfer a few of Whitby’s put ins, this was the only limp point of a stiff performance away from home.
Again the rampant bull Dave Straker added two more tries to give a boost to the Whitby’s score. The winger Joe Quinn got a deserved try after ducking and diving saw him dart out with no-one in front of him for a simple sprint to the line. The cumbersome lads in the scrum got fed up with the backs taking all the stardom so they decided to have a go themselves but after many phases of play with Darren Lonsdale’s power runs and Barney Allgood and Ste Gildroy’s excellent support work saw them ungreedly give it to the movers and groovers of the backs which saw Oliver Roberts go over again for his second of the match.
From a further derisory scrum from Whitby saw the Chester’s number 8 go over for a score, this was a well justified try from Chester as they had upset the Whitby scrum all game.
The last notch on the score sheet was to be a Whitby one from another zig zagging run from the winger Joe Quinn. Another good quality presentation away from home for Whitby but the scrum needs to work slightly harder in the tight, against bigger opposition scrums this could be the only chink in our armour.
