Old Rishworthians v Whitby U16 27-09-09

Under 16 Rugby    Sunday 27th September

Whitby  had a two and a half hour journey to face Old Rishworthians in the first round of the Yorkshire Cup and during the opening exchanges it appeared that they still had the journey in their legs as Old Rushworthians put them under severe pressure it was only determined defending that stopped Old Rishworthians from scoring but in the end the pressured told and Whitby conceeded a penalty which the home team converted. When Whitby manged to go on the attack poor handling and conceeding too many penalties, for going off their feet in the maul, meant that they were struggling to get into the game. It took until halfway through the first half for Whitby to score breaks by Matt Dudman and Jack Reeves lead to the ball being passed to Whitby flyhalf Sam Webster who scored Whitby's first try. This gave the team confidence and it wasnt long before Whitby started to stretch Old Rishworthians all over the pitch and Matt Dudman ran round a couple of defenders to score another try leaving the score at half time Old Rishworthians 3 Whitby 10
Stern words from Whitby coach Matt Webster at half time saw the team come out with all guns blazing the forwards were winning most of the scrums and them winning the ball allowed the backs to show some of their flair whilst  attacking the Old Rishworthian defence and Whitby's next score was a 35m penalty converted by Sam Webster. Now Whitby were well in control and it was only a matter of time before they scored again and Jack Braithwaite running in twice to give Whitby a 20 point lead, however, with time running out Whitby let their concentraton lapse and when two of their defenders collided one of the Old Rishworthians second rowers ran in for an unopposed try under the posts this was then converted. The match finished with an unfortunate injury to Whitby second row Josh Shutt who had to go to hospital with shoulder injury.
This was a good win,in the cup, for Whitby although they made hard work of the match and they could have a much great margin of victory
