Whitby v Wensleydale 04-10-09

Whitby under 16 Rugby   Sunday 4th October

Whitby hosted a mixed age group team from Wensleydale in a rearranged game. Whitby were missing 5 key players,Alex Beaumont Matt Dudman and Joe Lenton were at the Yorkshire trials, and Josh Shutt and James Newton out with injury.Wensleydale started the match very positively playing with the wind and down the slope and within a few minutes of kick off they were awarded a penalty which they converted. However their lead was short lived, Sam Webster took the game by the scruff of the neck and started to dictate moves, it only took a couple of minutes before a slickly played missed pass saw the ball going to Dom Hill and he scored the first Whitby try.
Whitby were playing against the wind but keeping the ball in hand helped them to stay in the Wensleydale half and soon the inspirational Sam Webster scored Whitby's second try, even when Wensleydale got the ball they were stopped with some determined tackling from Tom Opper.Connor Clennan, playing at inside centre, was making some great breaks allowing Dom Hill plenty of room to gain ground and Whitby were in control until some sloppy play at a ruck lead to Wensleydale scoring down the blindside but this only inspired Whitby and both Sam Webster and Dom Hill scored their second tries before half time. The half time score was Whitby 24  Wensleydale 8
Whitby restarted the game in control and playing with the elements, Dom Hill soon ran into the corner to score his third try of the game Then Whitby conceeded a penalty which Wensleydale converted but Whitby kept battling and before the final whistle  Jack Reeves scored a try which was converted by Connor Clennan This was a good match which was enjoyed by both teams.
Final Score  Whitby 28  Wensleydale 11
Man of the Match Sam Webster
Special mention goes to Tom Opper who had his best game for Whitby to date.

Try Scorers  Dom Hill 3
Sam Webster 2
Jack Reeves
Conversions  Sam Webster  3
Connor Clennan

After the game Whitby were pleased to get the news that Alex Beaumont and Matt Dudman had gained places in the Yorkshire Squad, unfortunately despite a good trial Joe Lenton just missed out
