Hartlepool BBOB v Whitby 10/10/09
Whitby – 20
In Whitby’s customary away form they set off at a sluggish pace and BBOB ran in two tries in the first ten minutes, the second of their tries coming from an efficient move which saw the robust full back run straight under the posts. Whitby did start to battle back and from a firm scrum, the ball went down the line and saw Dave Straker outpace the man on the wing to go over for Whitby’s first score.
Whitby kept on the pressure and from a 22 drop out the ball landed in Straker’s hands and with a direct straight run saw him go over the line with no resistance. Again BBOB had some resilient runs and eventually Whitby players got drawn in and they went over for their third of the game. Whitby’s backs were running well with Allen commanding the play and giving Latus, Straker and Fountain good ball to have a go at the BBOB’s resistance. Some excellent Scrummaging from Whitby with Shane Young setting the standard and demanding everyone give a little more and work harder in the tight.
From a scrum won against the run of play and with some good possession play saw the winger Tim Richardson go over in the corner
In the second half Whitby came out strong and was pushing the opposition around and winning opposition ball well. From a decent passage of play with strong runs from James Gildroy and Darren Lonsdale saw captain Oliver Roberts go over in the corner to give Whitby the lead by 1 point.
The last quarter of the game was very tight with both teams cancelling each other out going from one end of the pitch to the other; each team was looking for that final break to take the game. With less than 5 minutes left on the clock Whitby were defending in their own half and an excellently placed kick by the BBOB winger fell into his opposite wingers hands and he grounded the ball to break the Whitby hearts.
Whitby pushed for the remainder of the game and tried to get back up the pitch to give them the best chance possible but from a BBOB scrum they kicked the ball out and that was the end of that. Disappointing game from Whitby this week, this is a wake up for the rest of the season and cant let our guard down at any time, on a plus point the scrum has finally sorted itself out and hopefully can now repeat the performance next week.
