Whitby Under 16 rugby       Sunday 1st November

On what was the worse day of the season so far Whitby entertained Selby, one of the stronger teams in North Yorkshire. With several players missing through injuries and Yorkshire commitments Whitby were always going to find this a tough test.Both teams found it hard to master the conditions but they went on to show some of the best quality rugby the gale force winds and driving rain  would allow. Whitby started with the wind behind them for the first half and manged to take the lead after a period of sustained pressure when Jack Howell, who was making his home debut for Whitby, crossed the try line in the corner.

However, this only increased Selby's determination they kept the ball under close control and showing a strong forward presence in the close quarter contact areas they put Whitby under the longest period of continuous pressure they have experienced this season  eventually the Whitby defence cracked and Selby scored a richly deserved try in the corner making the score at half time 5 all.

For the second half Selby were playing with the wind behind them and Whitby defended expertly holding Selby up and breaking down any attacks. Despite the appalling weather conditions both teams displayed a level of skill that was a pleasure to watch for the large crowd that had turned out despite the conditions,the game was also very well controlled by the referee who allowed the game to flow and made allowances for the weather. This was a entertaining encounter by two strong well organised teams .No man of the match award was made as all the players are to be congratulated on providing such a great spectacle despite the adverse conditions.
