1970s & 1980s
The 1970s started with the Extension to the club being opened. On 8th October 1972 a 21st anniversary match v Cleveland select XV was played.
1971-72 Darryl Grason makes club debut at the age of 13 in our 2nd XV 8-39 defeat at Fyling Hall.
Decimalisation inflation starts to bite. Subs increased to £3.00.
In 1978 the first Sandy Aitchinson Cup Match v Scarborough which Scarborough won it 30-6.
1981-82 The club went on tour to Amsterdam, the players played two games of rugby. Which they won 38-12 v Haarlem RFC and 46-4 v the Smugglers RFC. Also the club visited the largest brewery in Holland.
In 1982 the 1stXV reached the semi-final of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy losing narrowly to eventual winners, Huddersfield YMCA.
1988-89 1stXV are Durham & Northumberland Div 2 Champions with P33 – W25 – L7 – D1 – F750 – A307. Top try scorer John Wardell with 20. Below is the official opening photo.
